Salisbury University Press Release

Community Players is pleased to announce that we will produce “Doubt: A Parable” by John Patrick Shanley at Caruthers Hall, Salisbury University, on July 10, 11 and 12, 2009

This drama, which won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony for best play when it ran on Broadway in 2005, represents a departure from our usual fare.

The play explores themes of doubt versus certainty, and the ethical consequences of our conclusions.  The plot revolves around the ethical dilemma facing the nun who is principal of a Catholic elementary school in 1964.  She becomes suspicious that the assistant pastor has had inappropriate relations with an eighth grade boy.  Can she be sure, with only circumstantial evidence?  What should she do about it?  What will the consequences be for herself, for the children, the priest and the church?

The play will be directed by Kel Nagel, and produced in conjunction with the Department of Philosophy at SU.  It is essentially a long one act, running about ninety minutes.  We plan a short break after the show, followed by discussion led by SU philosophy professor and ethicist Dr. Francis Kane.

While this play contains no overt sexuality and no untoward language, we do not feel it is appropriate for children under high school age.  It is most certainly not anti-Catholic or anti-religious, but we understand that some of our usual audience and patrons may not wish to participate in it.  We will therefore produce it separate from our regular season, with separate ticketing and patron and advertising opportunities.

We are very excited about this opportunity to stretch our theatrical horizons by bringing this thought provoking drama to our community.  We hope that you will be also.   Further information will be forthcoming.

We are updating our archives and want to include pictures and programs from past Special Productions as well. If you have any show pictures from these productions, please e-mail CommunityPlayersofSalisbury@Gmail.com
